The Strikers, one of the newer teams in the league, started their second season entering into the Ref-Fuel Tournament. Despite the tough competition from the opposing four teams, the Strikers managed to give their opponents a run for it all. The team only allowed eight goals in all five games and tied in two of the games.
The "brick wall defense" by Elizabeth Malhame, Darcy McGuire, Maggie Kiley and Marisa Cameron made their opponents regroup several times and change their strategy as they stopped them in their tracks. The offense, consisting of Taylor Hennig, Jenna Fuchs, and Colleen Metzler, showcased much possession and passing style of play. In two of the games the Strikers had more shots on goal than their opponents. The mid-fielders, consisting of Megan Martinelli, Jessie Stein and Jillian Yoo, performed some serious running and blocking to defend the ball and help the forwards score. The goalies, consisting of Kathryn Montgomery, Kathleen Galgano, Katie Trimmer and Maggie Comiskey, made some fantastic saves preventing higher scoring games.
When the Strikers controlled the ball, they controlled it well and were able to move the ball around the field. When the defense was called upon, they also responded and stopped the big plays of their opponents. Though they lost some games, they picked up a lot of experience that they can use during the upcoming season.
The Strikers thank all the coaches, parents and fans for their support. The team also looks forward to playing with their two new members, Maggie Comiskey and Jessie Stein. The season opener is scheduled for Sept. 11.
