Thank you for your article on planning for the HUB. I'm a newcomer here on Long Island. But as an urban planner with experience in these kinds of projects, I agree that it could be a train wreck just waiting to happen. I'm just not very clear about their methodology and who is making, or has already made, the key land use assumptions upon which the transportation investments have to be based.
Perhaps they really haven't thought this project through or have already decided on the land use developments and (as we used to say in Chicago) "the fix is on." Maybe they are using the need for transportation investments to force/entice some reluctant stakeholders to sit down and make some decisions. If true, any of these approaches could blow up in their faces.
It appears to me that what happens in the HUB area is absolutely central to the economic future of Nassau County and our part of Long Island. So I really hope that the planning for development and transportation facilities connected to the HUB project can be successful.
