Due to popular demand, the recreation department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of Garden City. The class will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays beginning Sept. 10. The classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The cost of the program will be $125.

This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.

Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at his/her own pace and level of expertise.

Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in many Garden City homes. To register for this program, visit the recreation office in village hall.

The recreation department has secured tickets for Sesame Street Live at the Nassau Coliseum. This popular show will take place Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Tickets for this show will cost $17. To purchase tickets, visit the recreation office at village hall. A maximum of six tickets per family will be available for purchase. All tickets must be paid for in cash. The recreation department is now accepting sign ups for the last session of adult tennis lessons. These lessons are held at Community Park's tennis facility on Monday through Thursday evenings. The session will begin the week of Aug. 9. For further information or to register for lessons, visit the recreation office in village hall. The recreation department sponsors a Senior Program Line, which answers questions about activities for seniors and refers questions about services to the appropriate agency. Please call 465-4190 to reach the Senior Program Line. All Garden City senior citizens are invited to enjoy the morning at the Garden City Pool Monday, Aug. 16. The pool will open at 11 a.m. for seniors only and admission to the pool will be free. Proof of residency will be required. The Paul Cuneo Trio will perform in the picnic area beginning at 11 a.m. In addition, the snack bar will discount prices 50 percent between 11 a.m. and noon for all seniors in attendance. The recreation department's summer chess club began meeting Tuesday, July 13 in the small meeting room at the Garden City Library. The club will run each Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. through Aug. 17. Paul Dooher will moderate this program, which is geared for third through seventh graders. No registration is needed, please just show up at the library meeting room downstairs at the assigned time.

The Garden City Recreation Department presents Summer Music on the Village Green 2004 Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. The musical lineup is as follows:

In the event of rain, all shows will be held indoors at the Cultural & Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. Due to space limitations at the indoor facility, proof of Garden City residency will be required.
