According to the Stewart Manor Fire Department, at 3:22 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, the department responded to a report of a major trauma on Covert Avenue. Responding from Fire Headquarters, Chief Daniel O'Keefe was on scene in less than one minute, where he found a male who had suffered an amputation injury to his hand. The department ambulance was on the scene within two minutes of Chief O'Keefe, who, along with the crew of Stewart Manor ambulance 194, stabilized the patient through advanced life support intervention.

During this time, Chief O'Keefe requested a Nassau County police Medivac helicopter to the scene to insure an expeditious transport of the patient to Nassau University Medical Center.
Additional Stewart Manor crews responded to the scene in order to secure a landing zone on Covert Avenue for the Medivac helicopter. Within 14 minutes, the patient was en route to the hospital, where emergency surgery was performed.
