The recreation department's summer chess club began meeting Tuesday, July 13 in the small meeting room at the Garden City Library. The club will run each Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. through Aug. 17. Paul Dooher will moderate this program, which is geared for third through seventh graders. No registration is needed, please just show up at the library meeting room downstairs at the assigned time.

This Friday, July 16, children of Hemlock Park will be taking a trip to Adventureland in Farmingdale. The recreation bus will leave Hemlock Park at 11 a.m. Children will enjoy three hours of attractions at Adventureland and will return to Hemlock at 4 p.m. Hemlock Park staff will supervise the trip. The cost of this trip will be $15.

The trip is open to children who reside in Garden City. To attend this trip, visit Hemlock Park. The cost of the trip must be paid in cash; no checks will be accepted.

The following summer programs are run for adults who reside in Garden City. These programs are free but residency will be checked. The schedule is as follows:

Please join the recreation department's dance staff as they offer a special jazz workshop for students going into fifth grade and up. This workshop is being offered this week (July 12) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Cluett Hall. The cost of this program will be $20. Interested dancers should visit the recreation office to register. The Garden City Recreation Department's Dance Program for September is quickly filling up. Director Felicia Lovaglio and her staff have planned an exciting program for your children's enjoyment. Please visit the recreation office in village hall for details about the dance class schedule or to register for a class.

The Garden City Recreation Department presents Summer Music on the Village Green 2004 Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. The musical lineup is as follows:

July 15 Buddy Merriam and the Back Roads

July 22 The Chiclettes

July 29 Six Gun

August 5 Tom Wagner and the Village Music Makers

August 12 The Chaperones

August 19 Blue Heron Entertainment

In the event of rain, all shows will be held indoors at the Cultural & Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. Due to space limitations at the indoor facility, proof of Garden City residency will be required.

The recreation department will hold a pre-school camp for Garden City children aged 3.5-5 years old this summer. Pat Haas Leonenko will again run this very popular camp.

The pre-school camp will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's from 10:30 a.m. to noon during the following summer weeks:

Session 2 July 19-23
Session 3 July 26-30
Session 4 August 2-6
Session 5 August 9-13

The cost of this program is $75 per session. Children must be 3.5 years old by the start of the session in order to register. A copy of the child's birth certificate must accompany registration.

To register by mail, (walk-in registrations are now being accepted), pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall or at St. Paul's. Residents can also make their own by listing their child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session they are registering for. Mail all information with payment to the recreation department, located at 351 Stewart Avenue. Please make checks payable to the Incorporated Village of Garden City. The recreation department cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. Please make your selection carefully, as fees are not returnable.
