The next meeting of the board of commissioners for recreational and cultural affairs will be held in Cluett Hall Tuesday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce it is now opening registration for the Dance Conservatory Program, which will begin in September. Next year's program will prove to be as exciting and fun as this year's with the addition of Irish Step Dancing. Children entering third grade and up are also eligible to perform in the Student Showcase held at Adelphi University.

All classes will begin the week of Sept. 20 and run through April. A child must be 4 years of age to begin classes with the exception of Creative Movement. A child must be preschool age for Creative Movement, must be toilet trained and must be able to stay alone in a supervised setting.

All classes are one hour in length. The schedule, according to grade level, is as follows:

Monday - 25 classes for $200

10:30 a.m. Creative Movement

1:30 p.m. Ballet/Jazz for Pre-K, Kindergarten

3:30 p.m. Jazz for Kindergarten, First Grade

4:30 p.m. Ballet/Tap for Third, Fourth Grades

5:30 p.m. Hip Hop for Third, Fourth Grades

Tuesday - 27 classes for $216

10:30 a.m. Ballet/Tap for Pre-K

1:30 p.m. Creative Movement

3:30 p.m. Modern for Sixth Grade and up

4:30 p.m. Jazz for Sixth Grade and up

5:30 p.m. Hip Hop for Fifth Grade and up

Wednesday - 27 classes for $216

10:30 a.m. Irish Step for Pre-K

1:30 p.m. Irish Step for Pre-k, Kindergarten

3:30 p.m. Irish Step for Second, Third Grades

To register by mail until June 30, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall. Residents can also make their own by listing their child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade they will be entering in September and the classes they are registering for. Mail all information with payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. The recreation department cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. Please make checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."

Any man or woman, high graduate age or older, who is a resident of Garden City is eligible to play on the recreation department's softball teams. Captains of established teams sometimes call the department for extra players and new teams forming always need a few more names. So if interested in playing softball this summer, call the recreation office to get on the waiting list.

Application packages are now available for the recreation department's summer softball league for women. Rosters will be accepted from teams meeting the following eligibility requirements:

1. All players on the team are high school graduates or older.

2. Teams comprised of current Garden City residents and/or

3. Teams comprised of players who resided in Garden City during their high school years and/or

4. Teams comprised of employees of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

The fee for this league will be $500, which covers umpire fee, balls and trophies. Applications will not be accepted without a completed roster package. This includes a signed consent form, a completed roster, a copy of each player's current driver's license and a check to cover the league fee.

Roster packages are available for pick up in village hall. The deadline for submitting completed applications will be Wednesday, June 24. League play will begin Tuesday, June 29.

The Garden City Recreation Department presents Summer Music on the Village Green 2004 Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. The musical lineup is as follows:

July 15 Buddy Merriam and the Back Roads

July 22 The Chiclettes

July 29 Six Gun

In the event of rain, all shows will be held indoors at the Cultural & Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. Due to space limitations at the indoor facility, proof of Garden City residency will be required.

In keeping with the opening of the Garden City Pool, the theme for June is "Swimming for a Healthy Heart." Please look for the Hearts and Parks brochure. There are limited openings available for the recreation department's summer tennis camp at Community Park. Please visit the recreation office at village hall to find out what is open and to register for the program. The recreation department's summer lacrosse camp will be held on the St. Paul's fields during the weeks of July 6 and July 12. The cost per camp is $60. This camp is open to Garden City children who will be entering grades 3-6 in September. The schedule for this camp will be as follows:
July 6-9 Entering grades 3,4 8:30-10:30 a.m.
Entering grades 5,6 11-1 p.m.
July 12-15 Entering grades 3,4 8:30-10:30 a.m.
Entering grades 5,6 11-1 p.m.

The recreation department will hold a pre-school camp for Garden City children aged 3.5-5 years old this summer. Pat Haas Leonenko will again run this very popular camp.

The preschool camp will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the following summer weeks:

Session 1 July 12-16
Session 2 July 19-23
Session 3 July 26-30
Session 4 August 2-6
Session 5 August 9-13

The cost of this program is $75 per session. Children must be 3.5 years old by the start of the session in order to register. A copy of the child's birth certificate must accompany registration.
