As the weather gets warmer and people begin looking for outdoor activities, I would like to remind Hempstead Town residents about a wonderful facility in the town.
Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve first opened in October 2000 and this environmental recreation facility has proven to be a true benefit to our residents ever since.
The facility features a kayak launch into the Meadow Brook and a fishing pier on Merrick Bay. Exercise enthusiasts can enjoy the numerous fitness stations along the three miles of nature trails. The park also offers unparalleled views of south shore landmarks and waterways.
The park includes a jitney to transport visitors to and from the summit, which is 115 feet above sea level. At the plateau residents can marvel at the incredible views such as the New York City skyline and the Great South Bay and see Levy Park's trademark windmill. What's more, visitors will enjoy seeing an abundance of wildlife ranging from fox and rabbits to turtles and birds.
Tours of the park are also available. The tours begin with an orientation at the park's outdoor amphitheater where groups will learn about how the former landfill was converted into a beautiful 50-acre environmental treasure.
The landfill is dedicated to the memory of the late New York State senator, a Merrick resident and a champion for the environment.
From terrapin nesting areas and butterfly gardens to the wetland restoration area, Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve offers something for everyone. It's a great destination for a fun-filled day for the family or an organized group tour.
Please visit Levy Preserve and enjoy one of the most picturesque settings on Long Island. To arrange for a tour, for hours of operation or for more information, call (516) 804-2000.
