The GC Strikers had a hotly contested game against a second place East Meadow team Saturday that ended in a 0-0 tie.
Garden City came closest to breaking the deadlock after 20 minutes of play in the first half when a tough hitting Freedom player just outside the 18-yard line fouled Megan Martinelli. Marisa Cameron took the free kick and forced a solid save from East Meadow's keeper.
East Meadow was also awarded a free kick later in the game but Kathryn Montgomery came up with a nice save on a long shot from the free kick.
Although both teams looked a little off kilter during the game, Striker halfbacks Jillian Yoo, Megan Martinelli, Katie Trimmer and Kathleen Galgano worked tirelessly throughout the game. Both teams attempted to increase the tempo and regroup after the interval.
Taylor Hennig almost produced a moment of inspiration to break the deadlock after 35 minutes when Jenna Fuchs made a brilliant pass to Taylor who was making one of her trademark dashes down the right wing. Taylor's shot went just wide.
Garden City forced several corner kicks in the second half but the East Meadow defense held fast. Colleen Metzler looked to put one of the corner kicks in the net but the East Meadow goalie made the save.
Once again, Darcy Mcguire, Elizabeth Malhame and Maggie Kiley prevented their opponents from getting off any clear shots on the Garden City goal and moved the ball to safety throughout the game.
