Does the village or town have any plans to introduce some kind of warning system or device to prevent trucks from striking the Long Island Rail Road overpass at Nassau Boulevard and Merillon Avenue? Based on the May 3 striking of the overpass by a tractor trailer it would seem to me that something needs to be done before something far more serious occurs.

I think that you will agree that the warning signs in place now are not getting 100 percent of the job done. I believe what's needed is a detection system that is similar to the one used on the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx.

It uses a motion type sensor that detects a truck that exceeds a certain height. In this case the height of the overpass. It then sends a signal to a display located well before the overpass telling the driver that his vehicle exceeds the height of the overpass and to exit/turn-off prior to the overpass.

A system such as this would of course have to be set up both north and south of the overpass. I think that most residents in this area would be in support of this.
