Garden City firefighters responded to a trailer fire at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street last Wednesday afternoon. Upon arrival, they found a fully involved fire in the rear (container portion) of a box truck being utilized for pavement lining. According to reports, the front portion of the attached trailer was also found burning.

Firefighters removed a cylinder from the truck after initial fire knock-down; the occupant/truck driver removed an additional cylinder and one two-gallon gas can prior to the department's arrival. The driver had also attempted (unsuccessfully) to extinguish the fire with three dry powder extinguishers.

A Nassau County Fire Marshal investigator and Nassau County Haz-Mat technicians were also at the scene. The cause of the fire was determined to be workmen placing hot extrusion dies in the rear of the container, which ignited nearby combustibles. Damage was evident to the container and its contents.
