Trustee John Watras, chair of the mayor-appointed trustee committee to recommend what to do with the current library and senior recreation center properties (both currently zoned R20, which permits residential use with a minimum plot size of 20,000 square feet), updated fellow trustees on the committee's work.
Speaking to a "litany of people" - everyone from the educational community such as Adelphi University to private developers like the Albanese Organization and The Garden City Hotel, Trustee Watras said the committee did find that there is an interest in purchasing both properties.
"At this time the hotel said there is no specific interest because there is no specific offer," he said. "However, if the property became available, the hotel may be interested in making it a small convention center." Parking would naturally be a key issue.
The Albanese Organization admitted it had no personal interest but suggested different medical practices could be appropriate for that location. Some local developers thought the library property is a focal point of the village while others considered the small piece of property an odd lot.
As far as the senior recreation center on Golf Club Lane, Trustee Watras said, "Again, I hate to say it but it is an odd lot." He added that the Garden City Golf Club currently has no interest for the property and mentioned that the owner of Lord & Taylor's said there's a remote possibility the property could be used for additional parking.
Mayor Barbara Miller appointed the committee, also comprised of Trustees Robert Rothschild and Jon Segerdahl, during a rescheduled St. Paul's work session back in February.
