The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a youth basketball camp for children of Garden City. This camp will be held in the St. Paul's field house the week of June 28.
This instructional camp run by Pat Kennedy will be held from Monday through Thursday according to the following schedule:
Grades 3-4 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Grades 5-6 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The cost of the basketball camp is $60. To register by mail only, no walk-in registrations will be accepted until May 27, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall or at St. Paul's. Residents can also make their own by listing their child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the camp they are registering for. The recreation department will hold a pre-school camp for Garden City children aged 3.5-5 years old this summer. Pat Haas Leonenko will again run this very popular camp.
The preschool camp will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the following summer weeks:
Session 1 July 12-16
Session 2 July 19-23
Session 3 July 26-30
Session 4 August 2-6
Session 5 August 9-13
The cost of this program is $75 per session. Children must be 3.5 years old by the start of the session in order to register. A copy of the child's birth certificate must accompany registration.

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a youth soccer camp for boys and girls who reside in Garden City during the weeks of Aug. 2-5 and Aug. 9-12 at Community Park (behind the pool).
This instructional program will be offered for boys and girls aged 6-12. Youngsters must be 6 years old by the start of the camp and entering first grade in September 2004 in order to register for this camp. Proof of age will be required.
The two-hour session will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $60 and will focus on individual skill development. The five-hour session will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at a cost of $125. The five-hour session will include an hour lunch break and swim session supervised by soccer camp staff to be followed by full field games.
The program is in its 25th year of operation and is under the director of Paul LeSueur, who has extensive professional experience as a player, coach, teacher and administrator. The camp staff is comprised of outstanding professional, collegiate and high school players. The purpose of the program is to provide a fun-filled learning experience incorporating the values of sportsmanship.
Youngsters will be placed in age-appropriate groups with the instructor/camper ratio not to exceed 1-10. Safe playing techniques and team cooperation will also be stressed. Each participant will receive a T-shirt as well as a Certificate of Completion at the end of the camp.

Hearts N' Parks is a national community-based program supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA). This inventive program aims to reduce the growing trend of obesity and the risk of coronary heart disease in the U.S. by encouraging people of all ages to aim for a healthy weight, follow a heart healthy eating plan and engage in regular physical exercise.
The Garden City Recreation Department will support residents in their efforts to join this growing trend by creating packets of information following a monthly theme. A different topic for healthy living will be announced each month and informational packets pertaining to the subject will be made available at Cluett Hall, Community Park's tennis hut, the senior recreation center and the recreation office in village hall.
April's theme will be "Eating Right for a Healthy Heart." Informational packets are now available.
The recreation department's open soccer time for residents of Garden City who are high school graduates or older began Saturday, April 17 on St. Paul's Soccer Field 2C. The program is open each Saturday on Field 2C from 9 to 11 a.m., weather permitting. Games are strictly pick-up and shin guards must be worn. The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to offer a six-week tennis program for boys and girls 5-18 years of age who reside in Garden City beginning Monday, May 3, through Thursday, June 17. The lessons will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5-6 p.m. or 6-7 p.m.
Applications for this program are available at the recreation office in village hall. Parents are asked to list the days and times their child is available and their child's ability level. Children will then be grouped according to their ability level. For information, call Sue Tarzian at 483-2525.
All Garden City residents are welcome to join the recreation department's women's spring tennis tune up. This program is geared to competitive and tennis team players. All sessions will be run at the Community Park Tennis Facility. The cost of each session is $60. The program has been divided into five sessions, as follows:

Session 2 Monday, May 3, Wednesday, May 5 12-2 p.m.

The Garden City Recreation Department will conduct evening tennis lessons for adults of Garden City at the Community Park Tennis Facility. The lessons will run in four-week sessions. The registrant has a choice of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at either 7 to 8 p.m. or 8 to 9 p.m. Invoices will be sent out once classes have been assigned. There will be a maximum of four players per court. Players will be grouped according to ability level. The beginning session dates will be as follows:
Session 1 starts May 10

Session 3 starts July 12
Session 4 starts Aug. 9
The recreation department's Adult Tennis Ultimate Workout will be held on the following Saturdays: May 1, 8, 15, 22 and June 5 and 12 from 10-11:30 a.m. the cost of this program will be $120. The Garden City Recreation Department began its spring season of Friday Night Roller Hockey April 2 at the roller hockey rinks in Community Park. The program is open to village boys and girls, ages 8-12. The program began Friday, April 16, and runs until May 21. The cost of the hockey program will be $25. Now that the weather is turning warmer, it is time to think about getting back into shape. The recreation department's aerobics classes are just the thing to get your heart pumping and your body moving. Pat Kennedy and Joy Cody, experienced instructors who try to tailor their programs to the ability level of participants, teach the classes.
The easy way to participate in the aerobics classes is to purchase a "20 Class Pass." By purchasing this pass, participants can attend any class that fits their schedule. The cost of a pass is $60. Passes may be purchased at Cluett Hall or in the recreation office in village hall. If you'd like to try a class or two before purchasing a pass, daily admission to a class is $4.

Adelphi's pool in Woodruff Hall is again available for adult residents of Garden City who would like to swim for exercise. The days and times are as follows: Monday through Thursday from either 8:30-9:30 p.m. or 9:30-10:30 p.m. This program is free but time must be reserved by calling the recreation office at 465-4075 on the day you would like to swim.
