For over two years, Peter Kasnicki and his neighbors in Garden City have been fighting to remove trucks and tractor trailers illegally parked overnight on Commercial Blvd. (between Oak Street and Earle Ovington Blvd.), on Brook and Chestnut Streets (just west of Oak Street at the dead end) and on Oak Street (heading south toward Hofstra University).

As early as 3:30 to 5 a.m. Kasnicki said tractors start hitching up their trailers with their "very loud and obtrusive back-up warning beepers" and have taken away the ability of nearby residents to sleep peacefully.

"Some of these tractor trailers carry garbage and waste and stay illegally parked and/or unhitched for days, even weeks," Kasnicki wrote the Life. "They are not supposed to be there overnight! In fact one vehicle caught fire several months ago and sat there for several weeks!"

Kasnicki continued, stating, "Unhitched trailers are a danger for children in the area. They pose a potential security threat ... Truckers talk to each other and know they can get away with it at these locations in the Town of Hempstead!"

Town officials noted overnight parking restrictions, between the hours of 12-6 a.m., are currently in place. Further, officials, after conducting several surveys, are considering creating the town's first commercial tow away zone. The proposal would have to go out to bid in order to find a company that could tow away those types of vehicles.

Residents have been in touch with the 3rd Precinct's Sgt. Walsh and Officer Sikorski, who said they have been issuing tickets to these vehicles, even making personal inspections, for the past two years. Kasnicki said despite all that, residents want an immediate change in law to provide the police with an "effective remedy" to this ongoing nuisance.

"... Give us back our peaceful community and streets and get rid of these lawbreakers," Kasnicki wrote. "The owners of trailers parked at the dead end (west of Oak on Brook Street) in the Town of Hempstead have turned a public street into a trucking company's own private parking lot ... These truckers have made a laughing stock of this community and have severely lowered the standard of living in our neighborhood ..."
