Miss Jenny Griesmeyer and Mrs. Linda Mulrooney were each recently awarded separate mini-grants from the Nassau TRACT Teacher Center. Their projects are planned to begin during this winter and will culminate in late spring. Both teachers will display their work and be honored at the TRACT Mini Grant Fair (date and location to be announced).
For the fourth year in a row, Mrs. Mulrooney, a Quest teacher, has been awarded a mini-grant to continue the Quest project, "The Garden City Legacy: A Working Textbook, Media Production and Historic Timeline." This project is designed to create materials that will provide Stratford students with a better understanding of the legacy of their local community. Fourth and fifth grade Quest students will begin their research now, after February break, and plan to have their manuscript to the printers by late spring.
Mrs. Mulrooney and her students encourage community involvement in this project. Anyone who would like to contribute information about Garden City should contact Mrs. Mulrooney at Stratford School or write to Mulsl@yahoo.com. She was awarded a separate software grant and, with the funds, has purchased several copies of the program entitled Timerliner.
Miss Griesmeyer, a third grade teacher, has been awarded a mini-grant for the project, "Enhancing Social Studies through English Language Arts." The project uses 10 pieces of literature to extend and enhance the curriculum being covered in the social studies textbook. Writing activities, based on New York State standards, were developed to accompany each piece of literature. Through this project, third grade students will develop critical thinking, writing and reading skills while building their knowledge of the world around them. The students¹ work, based on both mini-grants, will be displayed at Stratford School in the upcoming months.
Mrs. Mulrooney and Miss Griesmeyer would like to thank Nassau TRACT Teacher Center for their generosity. They are both looking forward to working on their projects.
