During the rescheduled St. Paul's work session last Thursday, Feb. 12, Mayor Barbara Miller appointed two trustee committees to further investigate the library/community center proposal.

Mayor Miller charged the first committee, comprised of Trustees Gerard Lundquist (chair), John Mauk and Peter Negri, with choosing the most qualified cost estimator for the project, which now incorporates tenant space on the third and fourth floors. The mayor also charged the committee with exploring acceptable uses for the 32,900 square feet of tenant space available on those floors. Village Administrator Robert Schoelle Jr. has received responses from seven cost estimators thus far.

Mayor Miller charged the second committee, comprised of Trustees John Watras (chair), Robert Rothschild and Jon Segerdahl, with recommending what to do with the current library and senior recreation center properties (i.e. sell, lease or reuse). Both properties are currently zoned R20, which currently permits residential use with a minimum plot size of 20,000 square feet. In order for another use to be permitted, rezoning approval would have to take place for both properties.

Garden City Library officials along with Bond Counsel Robert Smith, Architect Todd Harvey and Planner Frank Fish were all in attendance. Harvey admitted that the latest layout plan needs much more development if this idea were to go forward. For the time being, it identifies a little more of how this proposal could work in the building. He also concurred with trustees that it's important to have someone else, particularly a construction manager, walk into that building with a "fresh set of eyes."
