The subject, described as wearing a blue ski jacket, blue pants and a dark colored hat, proceeded to ransack several rooms in the house, stealing an unknown amount of jewelry and US currency, police state.
An ambulance responded to the scene but the 73-year-old was not injured during the incident. The investigation is continuing at this time. Police urge anyone who knows any information about the incident to call Garden City detectives at 742-9600.
According to Lieutenant Kenneth Jackson, at approximately the same time that afternoon, an 83-year-old Main Avenue resident answered his front door to find a male subject, about 5'9" in height and of possible mid-Eastern or Turkish descent. Police report that the subject, who was wearing a blue or gray fleece-type sweater, stated he was there to check meters in the basement for a gas company. The resident took him downstairs but became suspicious by the subject's actions.
Police state that when the resident made his way back upstairs, he saw two other subjects leaving the master bedroom. All three subjects reportedly left the area on foot, travelling in an unknown direction. US currency, gold and silver cuff links, one gold belt buckle and a black jewelry box were reported stolen.
Although police are not linking the two incidents at this time, they do warn that the latter incident is a scam by which subjects mostly prey on the elderly.
