The next meeting of the board of cultural and recreational affairs is Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the recreation department's Senior Center on Golf Club Lane. This meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Due to the success of the department's first session of ladder tennis play, the department is offering a new session beginning this Sunday, Feb. 1.

Ladder tennis play is an intramural program where children compete in matches adjusted to his/her level. The league is organized by age and playing ability. Interested children must be able to sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of the rules of tennis.

This program will take place on five Sundays beginning Feb. 1 from 2-3:30 p.m. at Community Park's tennis facility. The cost of this program is $75. To register for this program, visit the recreation office in village hall. For further information, call 465-4075.

This Sunday, Feb. 1, at Cluett Hall, the recreation department will offer a dance performance by the Corner Store Dance Company, a troupe of five men and women who dance, sing, act and play a variety of instruments in a lively, humorous review geared to the 3-12 year old child. The show will take place at 2 p.m. Admission for this program is $2 and reservations are required. To reserve a seat for the show, call the recreation department by this Thursday, Jan. 29, at 465-4075.

The recreation department is sponsoring a seventh grade recreation party this Friday, Jan. 30 in the St. Paul's field house from 7:30-9:30 p.m. admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games. Recreation department staff will chaperone the party.

Please note that once children are in the field house, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come down to the field house to pick up your child.

As a reminder to residents, the following free programs began before the holidays and are still ongoing.

For adults, all programs are held in the St. Paul's field house unless otherwise noted.

Men's open basketball Saturdays (GCMS gym) 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Men's Over 40 Basketball Wednesdays 7:30-10 p.m.
Women's Basketball Thursdays 7:30-10 p.m.
Co-ed volleyball Thursdays 7:30-10 p.m.
For children, all programs are held in the St. Paul's field house unless otherwise noted.
Chess club Saturdays (library meeting room) 12-2 p.m.
After-school recreation for boys Grades 3-5 Mondays 3:30-6 p.m.
After-school recreation for girls Grades 3-5 Fridays 3:30-6 p.m.
After-school recreation for Grades 6-8 Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 3:30-5:30 p.m.
After-school recreation for Grades 9-12 Wednesdays, Thursdays 3:30-5:30 p.m.
All programs are open to residents of Garden City. Please follow all age or grade requirements for children and/or adult programs.
The recreation department still has tickets on consignment for the following events at the Nassau Coliseum:
Monster Truck Jam Feb. 8 2 p.m.
Harlem Globetrotters Feb. 15 3 p.m.
Champions on Ice April 8 7 p.m.

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children's swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be 6 years of age by the start of the program to participate. The classes began Saturday, Jan. 24. Red Cross certified instructors teach the classes. The cost is $40.

Level 2 - Beginner level - will stress primary skills

Level 3 - Advanced Beginner - will stress stroke readiness

Level 4 - Intermediate - will stress stroke development

Level 5 - Swimmer - will stress stroke refinement

Level 6 - Advanced Intermediate Swimmer - will stress stroke proficiency

Level 7 - Advanced Swimmer

To register: By mail only, immediately. Walk-in registrations are now being accepted. To register, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall; or list your child's name, address, phone number, birth date and your first and second choice of classes on a piece of paper and send the note along with a $40 check made payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City" to the recreation office at 351 Stewart Avenue. For further information, call 465-4075.
