Flowers, teddy bears and pictures of past times with friends adorn a pole on Rockaway Avenue to remember 15-year-old Garden City High School sophomore Michelle Thompson. A 1999 Hyundai driven by a New Hyde Park woman struck Thompson and her friend Alyssa Parizek, also a 15-year-old sophomore, as they crossed the street at 9:16 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19.

According to police reports, the girls were struck when they got to the center double yellow lines and continued to cross. The New Hyde Park resident called police from her cell phone and covered one of the girls with her coat. Police arrived and transported both girls to Winthrop-University Hospital.

Thompson was pronounced dead at 12:28 a.m. Parizek was admitted with multiple injuries, including a possible skull fracture, fractured ribs, a fractured femur and other internal injuries.

Dr. Stephen Leitman, superintendent of Garden City schools, the Garden City Board of Education and the entire Garden City school community express their deepest sympathy to Thompson's family. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Michelle's family and friends as they mourn her passing," the statement said.

Police do not anticipate filing criminal charges against the driver at this time.
