Brian Kiernan, a sophomore at Garden City High School, has been named to the Nassau County high school hockey all-star squad, which will face off against Suffolk County in the 8th annual Vytra Cup Jan. 10 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale.
Sponsored by Vytra Heath Plans, the New York Islanders and Newsday, the Vytra Cup will benefit All Island Handicapped Sports, a non-profit organization that runs programs for physically challenged children, some of whom compete in the Special Olympics, and the New York Islanders Children's Foundation.
Kiernan plays forward for the Garden City Wings and has been playing hockey for nine years. His accomplishments include being on the National Honor Society.
The Vytra Cup has become a premier scouting opportunity for area college programs, and this year's game takes on added significance as a talent showcase because two local colleges, Briarcliff College and SUNY Farmingdale, will inaugurate hockey programs in the 2004-2005 season.
The Vytra Cup game will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and can be ordered by calling the High School Hockey League of Nassau County at 682-0594 or ordering at www.longislandhshockey.net and clicking on Vytra Cup.
