Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy and Mineola resident Joyce Gorycki invite residents to attend a memorial service commemorating the 10th anniversary of the "LIRR incident" at the Merillon Avenue station in Garden City Sunday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m.
Ten years ago, on Dec. 7, 1993, murderer Colin Ferguson arose from his seat on a 5:33 p.m. eastbound Long Island Rail Road train between New Hyde Park and Garden City and opened fire during rush hour. Ferguson's shooting rampage killed six, four on the scene, and injured more than a dozen others.
For McCarthy and Gorycki, placing wreaths at the train station in honor of those brutally killed, including their husbands Dennis McCarthy and James Gorycki, has become tradition, albeit a sad one. After three brave Garden City men finally subdued Ferguson, the train stopped at Merillon Avenue - a site where family and friends have gathered to remember loved ones every year. A jury found Ferguson guilty of the murders; he was eventually sentenced to six consecutive life sentences - about 200 years of prison time.
McCarthy and Gorycki remain united as friends and in a common cause - fighting against gun violence and for gun safety. Please call Gorycki any evening at 248-2036 with questions.
