Regrettably, all too often our young people are criticized for the negative behavior of a relative few. I am pleased to let you know that this Halloween was virtually free of vandalism, demonstrating that our young people do care about their village. On behalf of the parents, I thank residents for providing delicious but safe "treats" for the children. A good day was had by all!

Congratulations and Appreciation to the Chamber of Commerce and High School

Congratulations and a sincere word of thanks are due to the Chamber's Festival Committee and Garden City High School for the extraordinary effort that they expended to make the annual festival and street fair the success that it was. The magnificent weather made it even more festive.

As we move into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season I encourage all residents to continue to shop in our village. Our merchants along Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road have quality merchandise, which is only exceeded by their willingness to accommodate their customers. Village offices were closed Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. There was no garbage and rubbish collection on Veterans Day. Residents scheduled for recycling on Veterans Day are asked to put their recyclables out on Thursday, Nov. 18. Residents in the western half of the village will have their garbage collected on Monday and Thursday and residents in the eastern half will have their garbage collected on Wednesday and Friday.

Veterans Day is the one day each year in which America remembers her sons and daughters who served in the Armed Forces of the United States. It is right that a gratified nation set aside one day a year to recognize and remember these men and women.

On Monday, Nov. 11, the William Bradford Turner Post of the American Legion of Garden City held a short memorial salute to these veterans at 11 a.m. at the memorial situated on the library grounds at Seventh Street.

The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, in cooperation with the Nassau County Department of Health and Nassau University Medical Center, will co-sponsor a free countywide flu immunization program for senior citizens.

The immunization program for our area will be held at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center at 6 Golf Club Lane on Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents 60 years of age or older, who are interested in receiving the vaccine should call the Garden City Recreation Department at 465-4075 to make an appointment. Residents should be prepared to indicate if they wish to receive just the flu immunization, or if they would like the additional protection of the pneumonia immunization.
