Senator Kemp Hannon is sponsoring Senior Health and Awareness Day Friday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Field House (corner of Stewart Avenue and Rockaway Avenue) in Garden City. Senior health information, various health screenings, flu shots and information on senior programs, such as elder care and long term health care insurance, will be available on site.
Flu shots will be dispensed this year by Nassau University Medical Center, in cooperation with the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs and Nassau County Department of Health. There is no out-of-pocket expense to seniors.
Senior Health and Awareness Day provides seniors with the opportunity to speak with representatives from various health care agencies and programs, as well as gather information on some of the most important health issues facing seniors today. The following groups and agencies will be represented at the event: Hospice Care Network, Garden City Senior Project, Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment, The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, Long Island Power Authority, Visiting Nurse Association of Long Island, Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, American Parkinson's Disease Association, American Heart Association, Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs, American Lung Association, Broadlawn Manor, Arthritis Foundation, Mental Health Association of Nassau County, Long Island Regional Lead Poisoning Prevention Resource Center, Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, Senior Network Solutions, Long Island Crisis Center, NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Nassau Health Care Corp., American Association of Retired Persons, Grandparents as Caregivers, Molloy College, Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs and Chiropractic Health Center of New York Chiropractic College.
"I encourage all seniors to come out and enjoy Senior Health and Awareness Day. In order for us to maintain a healthy quality of life we must be conscious of our bodies' needs and this event will provide the information and testing needed to enhance understanding of personal health," Hannon said.
