Village offices were closed Tuesday, Nov. 4, in observance of Election Day and will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veteran's Day. For your convenience, correspondence for the village may be placed in the "Letter" drop slot at the front door.
There will be no garbage and rubbish collection on Veteran's Day. Residents scheduled for recycling on Veteran's Day are asked to put their recyclables out on Thursday, Nov. 18. Residents in the western half of the village will have their garbage collected on Monday and Thursday and residents in the eastern half will have their garbage collected on Wednesday and Friday.
Senator Hannon is sponsoring Senior Health and Awareness Day Friday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Fieldhouse (located on the corner of Stewart and Rockaway Avenues). Senior health information, various health screenings, flu shots and information on senior programs, such as elder care and long-term health care insurance will be available on site.
Flu shots will be dispensed at the Fieldhouse Nov. 14 as well as the Senior Recreation Center on Dec. 2 (see below for details). There is no out- of-pocket expense to seniors (60 years of age or older)
Senior Health and Awareness Day provides seniors with the opportunity to speak with representatives from various health care agencies and programs, as well as gather information on some of the most important health issues facing seniors today. Among the many sponsors is the Garden City Senior Project.
The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, in cooperation with the Nassau County Department of Health and Nassau University Medical Center, will co-sponsor a free, countywide flu immunization program for senior citizens.
The immunization program for our area will be held at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center at 6 Golf Club Lane Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents 60 years of age or older who are interested in receiving the vaccine should call the Garden City Recreation Department at 465-4075 to make an appointment beginning Wednesday, Nov. 5. Residents should be prepared to indicate if they wish to receive just the flu immunization, or if they would like the additional protection of the pneumonia immunization, which is also free.
