I'd like to suggest that your newspaper investigate the occurrences during the recent blackout, and in particular the experiences of some neighboring communities, Freeport and Rockville Centre. I've been told these communities have their own power system and did not lose power [Aug. 14]. Perhaps the Garden City Village authorities could look into an emergency diesel generator facility located at the town dump, which could be used to generate power for our community in the event of a major power outage.
Or perhaps with the cooperation of LIPA and Garden City, individual homeowners could obtain, with LIPA's assistance, small emergency generators for their homes that would provide power in similar situations. Granted that such a major power failure as occurred [Aug. 14] is extremely rare, but loss of power due to brown outs or heavy rain and snowstorms have occurred in Garden City more frequently. Also, the hurricane that hit Long Island in 1985 resulted in a power outage that lasted several days. This might be an option to investigate and brought before town officials and the property owners associations. As a newspaper, you're more accessible to both, and I'd like to see this topic pursued if possible.
