GCFD Helps Keep Village Going During Historic Blackout
Seconds after the lights went out in most of the Northeast, the phone at the Garden City Fire Department began ringing. From elevator rescues to excessive false alarms, the seemingly quiet summer day turned into the busiest 15 hours the fire department has experienced in years.

Historic Blackout Pretty Uneventful
For what's being dubbed the "largest blackout in history," it was thankfully uneventful, with no major incidents to report. According to Mayor Barbara Miller, who went to Police Commissioner Ernest Cipullo's office immediately after the power failed Aug. 14, said, "We should really compliment residents for their tolerance and cooperation with all municipal officials."

Recreation Department News
The recreation department will be running a "Learn and Play" hockey clinic at Community Park on Friday evenings beginning Sept. 5. The program will be under the direction of Andrew Karen. The clinic will run for 10 weeks according to the following schedule:

GCAA News
The GCAA is currently accepting applications for referees for GCAA boys fall 2003 season. Referees are used for second grade, third grade and fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade games. Preference is given to persons who have previous referee experience, soccer players and those who have completed the Centennials referee training course.
