At the wishes of the involved families who lost loved ones in the horrific events of September 11, 2001 and in collaboration with Reverend Bill Harmon, chairman of the Ecumenical Society, the village is planning an unveiling of the 9/11 Monument at the Village Green on that date at a time that will not interfere with residents attending any other religious service that may take place that day. As soon as Rev. Harmon gets back to us with this information a time will be set for this solemn event.
Beginning Sept. 15 the village will begin issuing railroad parking permits for the year 2003/04. Residents should be aware that the fee was increased last year to $50. Permits may be obtained at the Village Business Office, located at 351 Stewart Avenue. Those residents who already possess a 2002/03 permit will receive a renewal application by mail, which may be returned to the village either by mail or in person. A photocopy of your registration must accompany your application and check. Current permits will be valid through Sept. 30.
The Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will conduct the second of its monthly S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program this Saturday, Aug. 16. The program, which is being held at various locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, will make hazardous waste facilities accessible to as many residents as possible.
The Aug. 16 program will be held in Uniondale at the Greenfield Cemetery on Milburn Avenue. The hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Under the S.T.O.P. program, residents are able to take polluting materials to the facility and have them disposed of by a registered professional disposal company, free of charge. The facility will not accept the following materials: ammunition, explosives, fireworks, infectious or medical waste, propane or oxygen tanks, radioactive materials, unlabeled materials and fire extinguishers.
