The MIRACLE Club of Garden City High School recently hosted its second annual Miracle Miles walkathon at the high school. More than 100 students and parents participated in the Miracle Miles Walk and raised $27,500 for the MIRACLE Foundation.
The MIRACLE Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Garden City residents Michael and Patti Tenaglia. The Foundation's mission is to improve patient care, increase cancer awareness and fund worthy scientific research. In just a few years, the Foundation has spearheaded the creation of the MIRACLE Building, a new cancer treatment center at Mercy Medical Center to be staffed by Memorial Sloan Kettering. It has also supported breakthrough research at both Johns Hopkins University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is creating a comprehensive cancer awareness program.
According to the club's teacher advisor Nancy Fleming, the June event has a memorable meaning. "Miracle Miles is one way for our students to honor the legacy of Michael Tenaglia by following his steps to help the MIRACLE Foundation's mission to eradicating this terrible disease," Fleming said.
J&B Restaurant Partners (J&B), who manages all Friendly's restaurants on Long Island, once again sponsored the walk. J&B provided water, power bars and plenty of ice cream for the participants. "J&B is truly inspired by this group of dedicated students and hopes that this miraculous tradition continues throughout the years to come. It is an honor to be a part of and support these students and their efforts," Joe Vitrano, president/CEO of J&B, stated.
Garden City MIRACLE Club members have raised almost $36,500 this year through creative marketing programs. "Our efforts are a small way for us to really do something to help improve the lives of those touched by cancer," Garden City High School student Conor Sweeney said. The students have recorded a CD, designed a new club logo and have sold girls' gym shorts, stadium cushions, holiday crafts and gifts to raise funds.
"The commitment of our students and their efforts and dedication are admirable," said Garden City High School Principal John Okulski. "They are a great group of children who, at such a young age, are already making the world a better place. What they have accomplished so far is incredible."
