The Garden City Bombers and the Deer Park Falcons fought a fierce battle at Adelphi University with the Bombers coming up short 2-0. Joe Nuss struck out eight batters, incredibly pitching a complete game in the 91-degree heat. Deer Park used four pitchers in their half of the pitchers' duel. Chris Attardi, Paul Chilelli, Kevin O'Hanlon, Brian Kentfield and Nuss all hit well for the Bombers, but could not put them together. The Deer Park defense was flawless, pulling in a rocket hit by Joe Mohen to right field that might have tied the score.

The Garden City Bombers are playing a summer schedule that includes regional all-star teams from throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.

Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi attended the recent "Sound to the Cove - Swim to Fight Cancer II" kickoff swim. The nine local swimmers who participated in the exercise swam to shore early that morning at Morgan Park from a Glen Cove Harbor Patrol boat. The swimmers were training for Swim Across America's 10K charity swim on Saturday, Aug. 16. Suozzi was joined by Glen Cove Mayor Mary Ann Holtzkamp, Darcy Belyea, director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Glen Cove, and Gerry Oakes, director and chairman of the Nassau/Suffolk Committee of Swim Across America.

"Last year's Sound to the Cove swim was a great success, and from the looks of the turnout today, this year's swim will raise even more money to fund cancer research. I am encouraging all Nassau County residents to participate in any way possible with this fun and worthwhile event," Suozzi said.

The 2002 Sound to the Cove event featured 3.2 and 1-mile swims into Morgan Park. For this year's swim there will be 10K, 5K and 1-mile distances for swimmers of all skill levels. Collected donations from the swim will benefit the Miracle Building at Mercy Medical Center, home of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Nassau County. Proceeds will also go to fund cancer research at the Swim Across America Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in Manhattan.

Since its inception in 1987, Swim Across America has raised over $6.25 million for cancer research and treatment programs. In addition to the Sound to the Cove event this August, there was a Swim to Fight Cancer for pool swimmers at the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center on June 21. For more information on the Swim Across America program and events, visit www.soundtothecove.org or contact Gerry Oakes at 848-1426 or saa_ns@hotmail.com.
