On Sunday, June 8 the Peter Coleman - Bob Jahelka - John Kufs coached fourth grade Rams laxsters traveled to Manhasset to partake in their season finale. Just three weeks earlier the Rams, on the heels of a two-game skid, visited Manhasset and in dramatic, season-turning fashion, rebounded from a 7-4 third quarter deficit to defeat Manhasset's other 'A'-Division squad by a score of 10-9.
As in the case of most sequels, Woodstick Classic II paled in comparison to its predecessor, as a much improved and focused Rams unit journeyed to Manhasset's Molloy Field looking to play four strong and solid quarters. Garden City saved its best for last in playing one of its strongest and most complete games of the 2003 campaign.
The Rams' collective will and sense of urgency quickly overwhelmed Manhasset. In playing their finest game of the season Charlie Garcia, Austin Kufs, Kyle Lynch, John "Fin" Fineo and Timmy Noble lead a Rams ball-hawking frenzy that helped Garden City thoroughly dominate the all important game-within-the-game groundball battle.
Vastly improved players Billy Allen, Jack Manning, Michael LoFrese, James Raphael, Joe Horan, Sean Skramko and Christian Knoch provided the Rams with a continuous wave of unrelenting energy. As they have for most of the season, the Rams omnipotent face-off trio of Steve Jahelka (2 goals, 2 assists), Brian Coleman (1g, 1a) and Devin Dwyer (1g, 1a) excelled in dictating ball possession.
The tandem won 9 of 10 face-offs, many of which resulted in fast-break goals with crease-attackmen Matt Clarkson (4g, 1a) and Garcia (1g, 1a) being the recipients of several textbook unsettled drive-draw-and-dish exchanges. Goalie Brendan Logan displayed great hand-eye-coordination and agility in shutting out Manhasset for the game's third quarter, allowing Garden City (5-2-1) to forge ahead in coasting to a season culminating 9-6 road victory, the team's third straight win. The coaching staff is extremely proud of the team and would like to thank and commend the boys for their season long commitment.
