Alden Killin Small, 83, war veteran, banker and lay minister, formerly of Garden City and Hendersonville, NC, died June 2 at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh, NC. He was born in Port Chester, NY, on January 16, 1920, to the late Arthur Chester Small and Edith Thomson Small.

Mr. Small grew up in Montvale, NJ, and attended Park Ridge High School. In 1941 he graduated from New York University, where he majored in economics and was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Upon graduation, he received his commission in the U.S. Army.

Soon afterward, he married Shirley Eldridge, his high school sweetheart. During World War II, he was assigned to the Army War Show and later served in France and Germany as Headquarters Company Commander of the 100th Infantry Division. He attained the rank of major and was awarded the Bronze Star. In later years he was active in the 100th Division veterans' association.

Mr. Small worked for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City for 34 years. During his tenure at Chase, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking, and he became vice president in the National Division at Chase Manhattan with responsibility for the northern Midwest states.

He was a devout and dedicated member of the Episcopal Church. The Long Island Diocese honored him for distinguished service while he was a member of the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. Following his move to North Carolina after his retirement in 1980, he joined St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville. There he worked in Christian Youth education, led a Bible study group, established an exercise program and developed a senior ministry program called Fun, Food and Fellowship, which he ran for 17 years. He also served as a lay reader, Eucharistic minister and chalice bearer. When he and his wife moved to Raleigh in 2000, they joined the Church of the Nativity.

Mr. Small was a founding member of the Four Seasons Hospice of Henderson County, for which he served as a board member, fundraiser and volunteer worker with patients and their families. He was especially proud of helping to establish Elizabeth House, a health care center for hospice patients in Hendersonville.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Shirley E. Small, children A. Thomas Small and wife Judy Jo Small of Raleigh; Priscilla E. Small and husband Richard P. Baer of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and Clifford J. Small and wife Rosario C. Small of Raleigh; twin brother Thomas Killin Small of Chocorua, NH; grandchildren Benjamin T. Small, Jane A. Small, Luke S. Baer, Alexander D. Baer and E. Zoe Baer; great-grandchild Austin T. Small; and eight godchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Church of the Nativity, 8849 Ray Road, Raleigh on June 17. The family will receive guests in the parish hall following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Four Seasons Hospice (P. O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, NC 28793) or Hospice of Wake County (1300 St. Mary's Street, 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605).
