"What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that the fresh and young will ever fade."
-Gertrude Jekyll
Much could describe the Garden City Rams fourth grade PAL lacrosse team as they head down the home stretch of their 2003 season. Under the ardent tutelage of coaches Peter Coleman, Bob Jahelka and John Kufs, the team has fully bloomed, evidenced by their impressive and convincing 10-6 victory over West Islip at the Waldorf School.
Following a sluggish first quarter that ended in a 1-1 tie, the Rams (4-2-1) blitzed West Islip with five goals in a pivotal second quarter. Midfielders Michael LoFrese (2 assists) and James Raphael displayed great hustle in jump-starting the Rams' transition and groundball game.
Goalie John Bock was solid for 32 minutes, in receiving great support from a most improved defensive contingent of Tommy Adams, Timmy Noble, Tommy Martis, Brendan Logan and Scott McElroy. Devin Dwyer (4g), Charlie Garcia (2g, 1a), Brian Coleman (1g, 1a), Billy Allen (1g) and Matt Clarkson (1g) took turns accenting the Rams' offense. Steve Jahelka (1g, 3a) did a great job on face-offs, ground balls, drawing multiple defenders and distributing the ball to his open teammates. The entire team should be commended for their commitment and continual improvement in all facets of the game. The Rams played their final game at Manhasset June 8 at 2 p.m.
