Robert R. Primrose, of Garden City, died on May 20, 2003. Husband of M. Colette. Father of Tracey, Tricia and Robert. Grandfather of Timothy and Robbie. Brother of the late Lucille and George. Arrangements were made by the Fairchild Chapel, Garden City. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
Fred N. Ferrari of Garden City died at age 79 on May 17, 2003, after a long illness.
He was born in Brooklyn and raised in Newark, NJ. He graduated from Barringer High School, where he was All-County as a guard on the football team. In senior year he made All-State as an end. He was also co-captain of the football team and track team.
Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and became a corporal with the 5th Marine Division. He was wounded twice at Iwo Jima.
He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Presidential Citation from President Harry Truman for extraordinary heroism in action. Mr. Ferrari helped to ensure the conquest of Iwo Jima through heavily mined terrain, jagged cliffs and hand-to-hand combat. He was among the many who assisted with the famous flag raising on the island. He was also part of the American occupying forces in Japan.
A graduate of Seton Hall University, he began his career as a partner in Nino Foods with his two brothers, establishing one of America's first frozen pizza companies in the early 1950s. Mr. Ferrari remained in marketing throughout his career as president of Horizon Brands International and vice president of Blue Cross Laboratories, CA.
A long-time resident of Manhasset and Garden City Mr. Ferrari is survived by his wife, Terry; his children, Fred Ferrari Jr. of Manhasset, Mary Searson and Theresa Furman, both of Garden City, seven grandchildren, a sister, Theresa DiGirolamo of West Orange, NJ, and a brother Frank (Dick) Ferrari of Verona, NJ. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph's Church in Garden City on Wednesday, May 21.
