Rams Engaged In Another One-Goal Last Minute Contest
The hallowed grounds of the Garden City High School lacrosse field would fittingly host the site of the highly anticipated Mother's Day grudge match reunion between top-seeded 'A -Division' Huntington (5-0) and the Peter Coleman - Bob Jahelka -John Kufs coached fourth grade Rams lacrosse team. Rewind to nearly a year ago the day, in what became known as the Mother's Day Massacre, the Rams chalked their 2002 high-water mark in handing Huntington their lone loss of the season in a stunning and most dominant 8-4 road victory. Since then, Huntington had reeled off seven consecutive victories and brought high hopes of avenging the lone loss spanning their last two seasons.
From the get-go, Huntington stormed out of the gate and blitzed the Rams with five unanswered goals. Under a gloomy and steady mist, Garden City regrouped and weathered the storm. Goalies Brendan Logan and John Bock, along with defensemen Tommy Martis, Timmy Noble, Billy Allen and Tommy Adams adjusted and put the wraps on Huntington's offense. Capitalizing on the first wave of what eventually tallied nine Huntington penalties, the Rams' Man-Up unit helped close the deficit to 5-3 on goals by Matt Clarkson (2 goals, 3 assists), Devin Dwyer (2g, 2a) and Steve Jahelka (3g, 1a).
In a game of see-sawing scoring barrages, Huntington "rang the bell" with two goals to open the third quarter. Down 9-6 midway through the game's final quarter, Jahelka delivered a "Thunderous" textbook, game-stopping body check that sparked the Cardiac Kids to one last run.
Brian Coleman's goal with two minutes remaining brought the Rams within 9-8, making it the fourth straight week Garden City was engaged in a one-goal, last minute contest. Mike LoFrese's aggressive ride provided the Rams with a critical last ditch possession. In the game's final 30 seconds, Dwyer unleashed two close-range shots that found the Huntington goalie's stick, as time ran out on the Rams (2-2-1). The boys played May 16 under the lights at Manhasset High School.
