According to Village Administrator Bob Schoelle, work was slated to begin this past Monday on the village's September 11, 2001 monument, to be located at the northwest corner of the Village Green, facing Hilton Avenue.

The monument will memorialize the Garden City residents who lost their lives in the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center. The monument itself will consist of a concrete base, with red brick pavers positioned in a fan shape, according to Schoelle, and a three by four foot granite stone etched with the victims' names. Black granite benches and nearby landscaping will also be incorporated.

Original plans included erecting the monument at the train station near the public library on Seventh Street but in deference to requests by the families of those lost, officials agreed to put it near the gazebo at the Village Green.

Village officials recently mailed letters to the victims' families to confirm correct name spellings. Although Schoelle could not provide a completion date, he did say information regarding the village's anticipated dedication of the monument is forthcoming.
