On a chilly and blustery April 6 at the Garden City Middle School, the Peter Coleman - Bob Jahelka - John Kufs fourth grade Rams lacrosse team hosted Wantagh in Garden City's 2003 'A-Division' season opener. The Rams were most eager to begin league play, having commenced team practices in January, along with competing in two recent and impressive scrimmage outings against Massapequa and Rockville Centre. After a slow and sloppy start, Garden City jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in cruising to a workmanlike but less than pretty 9-5 victory.
Steve Jahelka led the Rams with great all-around play, including numerous ground balls, four goals and an assist. Devin Dwyer (2g), Matt Clarkson (1g, 1a), Charlie Garcia (1g), James Raphael (1g), Brian Coleman (2a) and Jack Manning (1a) shared the Rams scoring honors.
Middies Mike Lofrese and Austin Kufs helped Garden City dominate ball possession with their relentless hustle and grit. D-Dogs Billy Allen, Tommy Adams, Tommy Martis, Scott McElroy and Tim Noble continually stifled Wantagh's offensive thrusts. Goalies Brendan Logan and John Bock made stellar debuts, offering well-timed saves that prevented Wantagh from establishing any type of momentum.
Attackmen Joe Horan, John Fineo, Kyle Lynch, Sean Skramko and Christian Knoch helped the Rams win the battle of the ground balls, while providing well-executed rides against Wantagh's clearing attempts.
The Marist College's men's lacrosse team defeated MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) Lacrosse League opponent Wagner College by a score of 12-7 recently, improving their record to 2-8 and 2-3 in the conference. Leading the Red Foxes this season is junior attackman Brian Diele of Stewart Manor, who had one goal and one assist against Wagner.
Diele has played and started in all 10 games this season and leads the team in goals, assists, points and shooting percentage. He has accumulated 23 points on 16 goals and seven assists and has a shooting percentage of .432 on the year.
As a sophomore, he finished second on the team with 41 points on 27 goals and 14 assists. Last season, he scored four goals in a win over Canisius on March 16, 2002.
