Colleagues, Friends Mourn Passing of Noted Garden City English Teacher
Colleagues and friends mourn the passing of Russell Fritz on Feb. 1, 2003 from pancreatic cancer. Mr. Fritz's 41-year association with Garden City Public Schools has left many milestones that will long endure. He was born in Forest Hills, Queens on July 10, 1935. He received his BA in English from New York University in June 1957 and his MA in English the following year. He also was a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Fire Departments Urged to Participate in Grant Program
In an effort to bring local fire departments up to par with regard to equipment and fire vehicles, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy and Richard Ohlsen of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) held a workshop earlier this week to help departments file for grant money under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Hempstead Town Honors Women's Tennis Singles Champ
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presents a Town of Hempstead Tennis Tournament trophy to Eileen Moynahan of Garden City, the 2002 women's singles champion. Moynahan defended her title by taking a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Patricia Linton of Lido Beach, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), in the women's championship match played at Merrick Road Park last fall. Moynahan, a left-hander who works as an adjunct teacher in child psychology at Nassau Community College, has played in the Town of Hempstead tennis tournament for the past two decades.

With the spring sports seasons beginning, the recreation department would like residents to know that, although the recreation department allows the various volunteer organizations to use the village field space, it does not run any of the programs.
