The following activities are scheduled for middle and high school students for the month of January.

Rec. Nights: Admission is $4. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games.

Please note that once the children are in the field house, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come down to the field house to pick up your child. Each grade has its own Rec. Night.

Eighth Grade January 10 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Sixth Grade January 24 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Seventh Grade January 31 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Teen Movie: for sixth through ninth graders. Admission charge is $2 and refreshments will be served at a nominal charge. Recreation staff will supervise the movie.

Please note that once the students are in Cluett Hall, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. This month's movie will be Men in Black II, which is rated PG-13. It will be shown at Cluett Hall on Friday, Jan. 17. Show time will be 7:30 p.m.

Open Gym Time: for all 6-12 grade students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The field house is open and supervised for students to "play" with their friends in a relaxed setting.

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children's swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University swimming pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. A child must be 6 years old by the start of the program to participate. The classes will begin Saturday, Feb. 1. Red Cross certified instructors will teach the classes. The cost is $40.

Level 2 - Beginner level - will stress primary skills.

Levels 3 - advanced beginner - will stress stroke readiness.

Level 4 - intermediate - will stress stroke development.

Level 5 - swimmer - will stress stroke refinement.

Level 6 - advanced intermediate swimmer - will stress stroke proficiency.

Level 7 - advanced swimmer.

No walk-in registrations will be accepted until Tuesday, Jan. 28. To register, stop by the recreation office and pick up an application or make your own by listing the child's name, address, birth date and at least two choices of classes preferred. Mail this note along with a check made payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City" to the recreation office at 351 Stewart Avenue. For more information, call 465-4075.

Looking for a way to get into shape while having fun? Felicia Lovaglio, director of the Dance Conservatory, has put together a schedule of classes to help residents achieve their goals through adult dance classes. These one-hour classes will begin the week of Jan. 20 according to the following schedule:

Tuesdays Stretch (mat or towel required) 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday Ballet 9:45 a.m.
Thursday Tap 10:30 a.m.
Friday Stretch (mat or towel required) 9:45 a.m.
Friday Modern/Jazz 10:45 a.m.

All classes run 10 weeks at a cost of $78 per session and are open to residents of the village only. For more information or to register, please visit the recreation department in village hall.

The recreation department's winter after school program has begun. The field house at St. Paul's is now open for children who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City according to the following schedule:

Monday: 3-5 Grade Girls Elementary Program

Tuesday: Middle School Students

Wednesday: Middle and High School Students

Thursday: Middle and High School Students

Friday: 3-5 Grade Boys Elementary Program

Our elementary program contains both sports and recreational games. All activities are set up and run by recreation staff. Sneakers must be worn and no pre-registration is required.

The middle and high school gym programs offer a time when the students can "play" with their friends after school. Recreation staff is there to supervise but no organized activities will take place. The recreation department encourages middle and high school children to come and shoot hoops or play volleyball with their friends.

Please note that this time has been allotted for children to "hang out" with their friends in a relaxed setting, therefore no adults will be allowed to participate and no organized practices will take place.

The recreation department's Saturday men's basketball program began Saturday, Dec. 21 at the middle school boys' gym. This program is held from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday and is open competitive play for men aged 18 and older. Teams are formed on a "pick up" basis. This program is open to Garden City residents only. For further information, call the recreation department at 465-4075.

The recreation department's chess club began its winter session Nov. 2 in the small meeting room of the Garden City Library. The chess club, under the direction of Paul Dooher, meets every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. This free program is open to all children who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City in grades 3 to 8 who are interested in learning and playing the game of chess. This program continues through March 2003. The recreation department's adult swim began at Adelphi University's indoor pool at Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult 18 years or older who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The pool is open Monday through Thursday at two sessions; 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

You must sign up each day you would like to swim by calling the recreation department at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time. For further information; call the recreation office.

St. Paul's field house is now open from noon to 3:30 p.m. for family gym time. This program is designed for village parents and their children to spend time together as a family enjoying various gym activities in an open and unstructured setting.

Please note that this is not a drop off program. All children are to be accompanied by a parent. No organized practices are allowed at this time.

The recreation department will once again offer tickets to see the "Magicians of the Basketball Court," the world famous Harlem Globetrotters at Nassau Coliseum on Friday, Feb. 7. This 7:30 p.m. performance will be the only show the Globetrotters will present at the coliseum this year. Tickets are $27 and are available to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The recreation department is pleased to announce the start of registration for the 2003 spring instructional dance program offered at Cluett Hall. This program is open to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City only. Classes will begin the week of Jan. 20. There are limited openings in this program.

Please note that all children wanting to register for the following classes must be 4 years old by the start of the class. All classes run for 13 weeks. The schedule is as follows:
