J. Fred Helmus, 99, passed away on Dec. 18, 2002 in Bradenton, FL. Fred was born and lived in Brooklyn until 1935, at which time he moved to Rockville Centre with his wife Hester Williamson Helmus. After five years, they moved to Garden City where the family lived for the next 18 years. While in Garden City, he was very active in village activities, including being a trustee representing the Estates Section. He then moved to the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida where he lived for his remaining 42 years.
Fred graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and attended Pace University, Columbia University and NYU for specialized studies. In 1929, he established J. Fred Helmus & Co. Inc., an insurance brokerage firm where he worked until he retired in 1958. His two sons, John and Arthur continued the business until their retirement.
His son, Arthur, and three daughters-in-law, John's wife Barbara, Robert's wife Anne and Arthur's wife Joanne, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive him. He was predeceased by Hester, his wife of 42 years, Eleanor, his wife of 29 years, and his sons John and Robert.
He was a life member of Anglo Saxon Lodge 137 of NY and a previous member of Garden City Golf Club, Cherry Valley Country Club, Garden City Casino, Hempstead Country Club, Sara Bay Country Club and Gyro Club of Sarasota Florida.
Robert P. Weber, 55, of Garden City, died on Dec. 22, 2002. Husband of Dorothy. Father of Robert II, Thomas and Brian. Son of Margaret. Brother of Gregory and Martin. Arrangements were made by the Fairchild Chapel, Garden City. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's RC Church.
