A memorial monument paying tribute to the more than 20 residents that perished in the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks will soon make its way to the northwest corner of Garden City's Village Green. The stone monument, at a cost of $21,375, will bear the names of those lost, according to Village Administrator Robert Schoelle.
Concerned with whether or not the aforesaid appropriated funds would allow for any possible modifications to the design, Trustee John Mauk said many of the people who lost loved ones in the attack are interested in incorporating into the memorial monument's design an artifact from the World Trade Center.
"There is a collection point that's been set up and artifacts have been collected in other communities that are also planning memorials. I just want to make sure that the amount of money we're appropriating would include any possible future changes," he said.
Schoelle explained that the fee is based on the design submitted to the village. "The artifacts I don't think will add significantly to this figure. The reason we're bringing this forward," he said at last Thursday's board meeting, "is because we cannot authorize a purchase order until the funds are transferred."
Although village forces will lay out the monument, officials will engage a masonry contractor to do the base and a stone contractor to acquire, etch and install the monument's stone, Schoelle said, and projects the village could be in receipt of the stone within the next three to four months.
The village is in receipt of the more than 20 names of those who died. Trustee Peter Negri questioned whether or not officials have checked the accuracy of those names. Well aware of the project's sensitivity, Schoelle said, "We are informing residents of the project and could possibly provide a rendering of the monument. I expect the publicity will be done as soon as is practicable. The sooner the better though."
Original plans included erecting the monument at the train station near the public library on Seventh Street but in deference to requests by the families of those lost, officials agreed to put it near the gazebo at the Village Green, located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues.
