The recreation department will be showing the animated feature, Hey Arnold, on Friday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. in St. Paul's Cluett Hall. This film is rated "PG" and runs for 76 minutes. Admission to the movie is free and popcorn and snacks will be available at a nominal charge.
On Tuesday, Dec. 31, St. Paul's Field House will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for "open gym time." The field house will be supervised but no organized activities will take place.
The recreation department will run a holiday gym program in the St. Paul's field house on Dec. 26, 27, 28 and 30 according to the following schedule:
Grades K-1 9-10:30 a.m.
Grades 2-3 10:30-12 p.m.
Grades 4-6 12-2 p.m.
Supervised activities will be run for all grade groups up to sixth grade. The recreation staff provides supervision. In addition, the gym will be open for the following grade groups for open gym time:
Grades 7-12 2-5 p.m.
No organized activities will take place at the time but the recreation staff will supervise the group. For further information, call 465-4075.
Maureen O'Gara, the recreation department's in-house theatre expert, will be home for the Christmas holidays and the department is hoping to set up a theatre workshop starting Friday, Dec. 27 for children aged 7-12. The recreation department's winter after school program has begun. The field house at St. Paul's is now open for children who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City according to the following schedule:
Monday: 3-5 grades girls elementary program
Tuesday: middle school students
Wednesday: middle and high school students
Thursday: middle and high school students
Friday: 3-5 grades boys elementary program
The elementary program contains both sports and recreational games. All activities are set up and run by recreation staff. Sneakers must be worn and no pre-registration is required.
The middle and high school gym programs offer a time when the students can "play" with friends after school. The recreation staff is there to supervise but no organized activities take place. The recreation department encourages the middle and high school children to come and shoot hoops or play volleyball with their friends.
Please note: this time has been allotted for children to "hang out" with their friends in a relaxed setting, therefore no adults will be allowed to participate and no organized practices will take place.
The recreation department's Saturday Men's Basketball Program began Saturday, Dec. 21 at the middle school boys' gym. This program will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each Saturday.
This program is open competitive play for men aged 18 and older and teams are formed on a "pick up" basis. This program is open to village residents only. For more information, call 465-4075.
The Garden City Recreation Department has secured tickets to "Freestyle Motorcross" at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. Don't miss out on the newest craze. The children's swim lessons held at Adelphi were held on Saturday, Dec. 21 but will be cancelled for Saturday, Dec. 28. The adult swim evenings at Adelphi are also cancelled until after the holidays and will resume on Monday, Jan. 6.
The recreation department is offering guitar and keyboard classes to residents who are in middle school or older. These courses will be offered on Wednesday evenings according to the following schedule:
Teen Guitar - 6:30 p.m.
Keyboarding - 7:30 p.m.
Adult Guitar - 8:30 p.m.
John Coco will again return as the instructor. Registration for these courses began Dec. 10 at the recreation department. The cost to register for the 10-week course is $40.
The beginner guitar course is designed for individuals with minimal or no previous guitar playing experience. Students will be instructed in proper playing technique, note reading and chord playing. Other topics of discussion will include the proper care of the guitar and improvisation. Students are required to bring their own acoustic or electric guitar (amplifiers are not necessary). A book fee of $6.50 is due to the instructor at the first session.
The keyboard class is designed for those with minimal or no previous keyboard playing experience. Students will be instructed in proper playing technique, note reading and improvisation. The recreation department is announcing the start of a series of interviews for summer jobs at the pool. For those who enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make a commitment to being part of a team that works hard to provide quality facilities for residents, the department would like to meet you!
Those who are presently a high school junior or older and are looking for a great summer job, stop by the department in village hall, pick up an application and schedule an appointment for an interview. Reminder: Those who were employed by the pool last year must reapply and be interviewed for the upcoming season. Interviews will be conducted on the following dates:
Friday, Dec. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The recreation department's chess club began its winter session on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the small meeting room of the Garden City Library. The chess club, under the direction of Paul Dooher, will meet every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. This free program is open to all children interested in learning and playing the game of chess. The recreation department's adult swim times will again begin at Adelphi University's indoor pool at Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult 18 years or older who resides in the village. The pool is open Monday through Thursday at two sessions: 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Sign up each day you would like to swim by calling the recreation department at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time.
The recreation department's adult volleyball program began in St. Paul's fieldhouse. Volleyball is open to any resident of Garden City who is 18 years of age or older. Residency will be checked upon entry, so please bring ID with you. This program will run every Thursday from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
