This Sunday, Dec. 8 at Garden City's 48th annual tree lighting ceremony at the Village Gazebo, Santa will arrive on a Garden City fire truck "sleigh" to assist Mayor Robert Lewis in the lighting of the village trees. Festivities begin at 3:30 p.m.

Sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings and coordinated by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, refreshments, donated by some local shops, will be served at the fire department. Featured will be the Village Music Makers and Garden City High School's Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

The Kiwanis Club of Garden City will be collecting non-perishable food items to be distributed to underprivileged families. Kiwanians will be set up near the refreshment area and encourage residents to bring along a contribution. All three trees - located in the central business district - will be lit from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. throughout the holiday season.

Many hands are at work to make this a most happy and meaningful event. The Chamber especially acknowledges Astoria Federal Savings, The Garden City Fire, Police and Recreation departments, along with the village forces who decorate the business district.

Please note that Stewart Avenue will be closed to all traffic between Franklin and Hilton Avenues between 3-4:45 p.m. There is no rain date for the event. In case of heavy rain or snow, however, call the Chamber at 746-7724 after 11 a.m. on Sunday. If no cancellation notice is heard, the tree lighting ceremony is on!
