Lawrence (7-1) held off a late Garden City (5-3) comeback and notched a 20-16 victory to ensure a spot in the Nassau Conference II playoffs. The Garden City loss meant that the Trojans would miss the playoffs for the first time since 1980.
After a scoreless first quarter Lawrence was able to break through and score on a 1-yard run by quarterback Tony Lopez. The kick was good and Lawrence led 7-0 with 5:07 left in the first half. Then with 46 seconds left in the half Lawrence scored again on a 3-yard run by Anthony Decatus. The kick was good and the Trojans trailed by a score of 14-0 at the end of the half.
Lawrence was controlling the ball and thus the clock behind the running of Sugar Johnson and Anthony Decatus. Lawrence got a big break in the third quarter recovering a Trojan fumble at the Garden City 25-yard line. Quarterback Tony Lopez threw a 7-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Sheldon Nunn to give Lawrence a 20-0 lead.
With 4:22 left in the game Garden City scored its first touchdown on a beautiful 55-yard scoring pass from quarterback Brad Griggs to wide receiver Buddy Kennedy. The kick was good and the score was 20-7. The Trojan defense held and Garden City scored once again on a 30-yard pass from Griggs to Ben Ginsberg with 1:29 left in the game. The kick was good and Garden City now trailed only 20-14. However an on side kick was unsuccessful and Lawrence was able to run out the clock. The final two points of the game came when the Lawrence punter ran the ball out of the end zone and the final score was 20-16.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5 the Garden City girls' varsity field hockey team faced Massapequa. Garden City (15-1) defeated Massapequa 2-0 in the Nassau Class A final. Senior Jessie Riccio broke the scoreless tie, scoring off a penalty corner. Meghan Crisafulli added another goal only 10 minutes later to guarantee the Garden City victory. Number 1 Garden City will advance to play for the Long Island title in a state southeast regional final.
