Local voters returned incumbents to their seats in Congress, the Senate and the Assembly last Tuesday. (Editor's Note: Please note that the total number of votes indicated were the latest as of press time.)

In the 6th Senatorial District, Republican incumbent Kemp Hannon defeated Democratic candidate Norman St. George. Hannon, who was first elected to the Senate in 1989, received approximately 61 percent of the votes while St. George received approximately 35 percent. Right to Life candidate Paul F. Callahan received 2,067 votes (three percent) while Liberal candidate Patricia Maher received 528 (one percent). This will mark Hannon's eighth term in office.

The 6th Senatorial District, which was minimally affected by the recent redistricting, includes the communities of Garden City, East Meadow, Hicksville, Farmingdale, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainview.

Michael Balboni, the Republican incumbent for the 7th Senatorial District, was re-elected to his fourth term. Balboni, who also ran on the Independent and Conservative Party lines, received approximately 47,480 votes (62 percent), defeating Chris Murray, the Democratic, Liberal and Working Families candidate. Murray received approximately 28,751 (38 percent). The 7th district includes the communities (or parts) of Stewart Manor, Westbury, Floral Park, Hicksville, New Hyde Park, Mineola, Manhasset, Port Washington and Great Neck.

Incumbent Maureen O'Connell, who was elected to the 17th Assembly District during a special election back in February 1998, was re-elected. O'Connell, who ran on the Republican, Independent and Conservative Party lines, received approximately 24,449 votes (69 percent). Democratic challenger Thomas Sobczak received approximately 9,930 votes (28 percent) while Right to Life candidate Joseph Cascio received approximately 1,082 votes (three percent) and Liberal candidate Jacqueline Maron received approximately 169 votes (zero percent).

The newly drawn 17th Assembly District now includes the communities (or parts) of Garden City, Garden City Park, East Garden City, Garden City South, Carle Place, East Meadow, East Williston, Albertson, Mineola, New Hyde Park, North New Hyde Park, Westbury and Williston Park and more.

Carolyn McCarthy was re-elected to her fourth term in the newly reapportioned 4th Congressional District. McCarthy, who ran on the Democratic, Independent, Liberal and Working Families Party lines, received approximately 92,232 votes or 56 percent. Republican, Conservative and Right to Life Party candidate Marilyn O'Grady received approximately 70,215 votes (43 percent) while Tim Derhman, who ran on the Green Party line, received approximately 823 votes (one percent.) The newly drawn 4th Congressional District includes the communities (or parts) of Garden City, Westbury, Mineola, Floral Park, Elmont, Franklin Square, West Hempstead, East Meadow, Malverne, Lynbrook, Uniondale, Cedarhurst, Inwood, East Rockaway, Oceanside, Merrick and Bellmore.
