This past week the girls' varsity volleyball team played their last three games of the season. First the team faced Floral Park. Captains Patrice Collins, Kristen Kraff and Jamie Lardner aided Garden City in its 25-19, 25-17, 28-26 victory. Collins had 12 kills, 8 digs and 3 aces while Kraff and Lardner totaled 12 assists each.

Next the girls took on Number 13 Great Neck South. The first round of the Class B tournament ended with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-17 Garden City defeat. This win advanced the Trojans into the Nassau Class B quarterfinal match as they played Number 5 Hewlett. Unfortunately Garden City, who is Number 4, lost 20-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-23. Although they lost, the team played an aggressive game. Garden City was sad to see their season end but they will keep in mind their seniors (Kristen Kraff, Jamie Lardner, Patrice Collins, Liz Lancevich and Katherine Pastrana) as they look forward to a successful season next fall.

The Hewlett Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead as quarterback Mike Higgins ran for 83 yards down to the Garden City 1-yard line on an option play on the first play of the game. On the next play Higgins scored on a 1-yard run. Hewlett kicked the extra point and led 7-0.

Garden City, who turned the ball over four times in the game, fumbled the ball on their first possession of the second quarter and Hewlett defensive end Brett Kornblum picked it up and ran 31 yards for Hewlett's second touchdown. The extra point was good and Hewlett led 14-0 at the end of the first half.

In the fourth quarter the Trojans came back behind senior running back Dan Oppedisano, who had 145 yards on 22 carries for the day. The Trojans mounted a 54-yard scoring drive with Oppedisano taking the ball in from the 4-yard line. Garden City lined up for the extra point and faked the kick with junior quarterback Andrew DeRosa throwing a pass to Dennis Hannan for the two-point conversion. This made the score Hewlett 14 Garden City 8.

With 3:49 left in the game Garden City mounted one last drive mainly behind the running of Dan Oppedisano. With 30 seconds remaining in the game, Trojans quarterback Conor O'Brien rolled to his right and looked to throw the ball to his receiver in the end zone but Hewlett intercepted the pass to preserve the win. Garden City (5-2) must beat Lawrence (6-1) to make the payoffs. The two meet this coming Saturday, Nov. 9 at Lawrence at 2 p.m.

The Garden City girls' varsity field hockey team defeated Baldwin in the Nassau Class A semifinal. Garden City, 14-1, proved once again that with a strong offense and aggressive defense they could rise above. Senior Meghan Crisafulli scored the only goal of the game with 3:06 left in the first half. Baldwin's goalie, Michelle Foxmade, was kept busy with 19 saves. Garden City's goalie, Caitlin O'Brien, had zero saves, thanks to her teammates.
