The annual observance of Fire Prevention Week in Garden City will take place Oct. 4-10. All residents and friends are invited to attend the annual inspection and open house on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 12:30 p.m. The program will be conducted at fire headquarters and in the employee parking field, located on the west side of village hall on Stewart Avenue.
Your fire department does an outstanding job to protect our lives and homes. Please stop by to show your support for them. I'm sure that your entire family will enjoy the program.
The village began issuing railroad parking permits on Sept. 1 for the 2002-03 year. Residents should be aware that the fee has been increased to $50. Permits may be obtained at the Village Business Office, located at 351 Stewart Avenue. Those residents who already possess a 2001 permit will receive a renewal application by mail that may be returned to the village either by mail or in person. A photocopy of your registration must accompany your application and check. Current permits will be valid through Sept. 30.
Speeding within Garden City will not be tolerated. A subject often addressed at Property Owners Association meetings is resident concern over vehicular speeds within residential areas of our village and the observation of vehicles exceeding the 30-mph village-wide limit and the 20-mph limit within school zones.
I want to assure our residents that violations will not be tolerated and that police department speed enforcement will be increased. It is most disconcerting to note that many of those who violate our speed limits are our neighbors - residents of Garden City. Please, in the interest of public safety, be mindful of the responsibility that each of us has as an operator of a motor vehicle.
