As summer comes to a close, it is once again time to begin preparing for another school year. As we prepare by shopping for clothes and supplies, it is also wise for parents to reinforce standard safety procedures with children.

A foremost concern is ensuring our children's safety when traveling to and from school. In 2001, there were an estimated 5,300 pedestrian deaths and 85,000 injuries on the road. In addition, a death caused by a motor vehicle crash occurred every 12 minutes.

To prevent accidents, review the following with all school-age children:

Walking and Biking to School:

There are still dangers young pedestrians face even though they are not riding in a motor vehicle. Some safety tips to remember are:

* Listen to the crossing guard's directions and never cross the street

against the light.

* Walk with a friend.

* When it is dark out, wear reflective material, which will make it easier for motorists to see you.

Riding the Bus:

Even though bus transportation is safer than riding in a car, students need to remember it is not only important to stay safe when the bus is moving, but also when entering and exiting. Remember these safety tips to protect yourself:

* When waiting for your bus, stay away from traffic and the street

* Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop

* Remember to stay at least 10 feet away from the front of the bus when you exit. The bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus

* Protect yourself! Be aware of drivers who do not follow the rules pertaining to buses on the road.

Riding in a Car:

The best way to protect yourself in a car is to always wear your seat belt. Wearing a seat belt reduces risk of injury by 45 percent. Make sure everyone is secured in the car properly; adults and older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats.

Motorists, in general, are also reminded to take extra precautions when school begins and throughout the year. Remember to slow down at crosswalks and adhere to the school zone speed limit.

"Educating our children about safety is a job for parents, teachers and the entire community," said Hannon. "It is my sincere hope that everyone will adhere to common sense rules so the 2002-03 school year will be a safe and productive one."
