The recreation department began running their popular summer Chess Club Tuesday, July 16 at the Garden City Library's small meeting room from 4 to 6 p.m. This program will run every Tuesday through Aug. 27. The Chess Club is free and open to children in third through eighth grade who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Paul Dooher will again moderate this program. A drama workshop will be held in August for children aged 7 - 13 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Maureen Bevin O'Gara has come up with a great program for children who are interested in learning about acting, sets, staging and other techniques involving theatre. The workshop will run Monday through Friday for two weeks beginning the week of Aug. 12 according to the following schedule:

Children aged 7 to 10 years - 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Children aged 11 to 13 years - 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The cost of this workshop will be $60. Space is limited to 12 children in each class.

To register: By mail or in person immediately. If registering by mail, please list the child's name, address, phone number, birth date and the code "Drama Camp" on a sheet of paper and mail it with a check payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City" to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue.

The recreation department will be running trips to Adventureland Park in Farmingdale all summer! Each Friday, the recreation bus will leave at 11 a.m. from one of the village playgrounds and transport the children to Adventureland. The children will enjoy unlimited rides for three hours and then return to the same park around 4 p.m. The cost of this trip will be $14. Payment must be made in cash only.

The next trip will take place from Nassau Haven Park on Friday, July 19. Registration is ongoing at Nassau Haven Park. For further information, contact Nassau Haven at 775-9316.

The recreation department has revised the Adult Summer Tennis Lesson program. This program is open to any residents of the village, 18 years or older. The cost of this program will be $90 per session. To provide more flexible scheduling of program offerings, classes will run on the following dates and times:

Mondays

Session 1 - July 22, 29, 7-8:30 p.m. - Drill and Workout for novice, intermediate and advanced.

Session II - Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26, 8:30-10 p.m. - Learn and Play for novice, intermediate and advanced.

Tuesdays

Session I - July 23, 30, 7-8:30 p.m. - Drill and Workout for novice, intermediate and advanced.

Session II - Aug. 6, 13, 20, 27, 8:30-10 p.m. - Beginners only - Learn & Play.

Wednesdays

Session I - July 24, 31, 7-8:30 p.m. - Drill and Workout for novice, intermediate and advanced.

Session II - Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28, 8:30-10 p.m. - Learn & Play for novice, intermediate and advanced.

Thursdays

Session I - July 18, 25, Aug. 1, 7-8:30 p.m. - Drill and Workout for novice, intermediate and advanced.

Session II - Aug. 8, 15, 22, 29, 8:30-10 p.m. - Learn and Play for novice, intermediate and advanced.

To register for any of these sessions, please come to the recreation department in village hall.

The recreation department will again run its popular Pee-Wee Tennis program in the community playgrounds. The Pee-Wee program is a starter program for children aged 4 to 6 years who are residents of Garden City. The sessions will be held at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon and will be held in the neighborhood parks according to the following schedule:

Edgemere Park week of August 12

Hemlock Park week of August 5

Nassau Haven Park week of July 22

Tullamore Park week of July 29

Each lesson will last 45 minutes and will cost $30 per weekly session, There will be a limit of eight children per time slot. To register: registration begins immediately. All registration for this program will be done at the recreation office in village hall. Please make checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City." The 2002-03 women's tennis league is now beginning to form. The leagues will begin to play in late September and continue for 26 weeks in the Garden City Community Park tennis facility. This is an intramural league, which is open to any adult resident woman who lives in the village. The following singles and doubles (partner not needed) schedule is available:

Monday level 3.5-4 doubles 1-2:30 p.m.

Tuesday level 2.5 singles 12-1 p.m.

Wednesday level 3-3.5 singles 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Thursday level 3-3.5 doubles 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Thursday level 3-3.5 singles 1-2 p.m.

Friday level 2.5 singles 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Friday level 3 singles 12-1 p.m.

Friday level 3.5-4 singles 1-2 p.m.

There will be a fee to join this league, which will be determined before the start of the season. Anyone playing in the league MUST pre-register and pay their league fee BEFORE they begin play.

Any woman interested in joining the Garden City Community Park Women's Tennis Leagues should call League Coordinator Anne Marie Kenny at 248-2177. Players from last season need to confirm their playtime this fall.
