Compliments are due to the recreation department for arranging this season's outstanding Concert Series at the Village Gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues. This week's program, scheduled for Thursday, July 18, will feature Tangerine - top 40s and disco hits for your enjoyment.
The program will begin at 7:15 and admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's School. Please contact the recreation program line (742-5888) with questions pertaining to the concert.
Working in cooperation with the village, merchants have placed tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for our enjoyment. Please stop by to let the merchants know that you appreciate their efforts. I urge our residents to become familiar with their local merchants and businesses and to shop in Garden City. You will be pleased with the selection, quality and commitment to customer service.
A reminder to residents that the village's law with regard to water conservation (Local Law 3-1987) is now in effect. The restrictions are:
Lawn sprinkling and garden irrigation only from April 16 to November 30 of each year and only during the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The days a person may water are:
-odd numbered properties on odd numbered days
-even numbered properties on even numbered days
-properties with no numbers on even numbered days
Automatic Sprinkler Systems:
All newly installed systems must have moisture sensors approved by the Department of Public Works.
Miscellaneous
-all home car washing must be done with hoses fitted with spray nozzles with automatic shut-off
-use of water for washing down driveways or walkways is prohibited
Please cooperate by observing these restrictions. The Police Department has been requested to issue appearance tickets to those persons found to be in violation of this law.
A number of thoughtful residents have been inconvenienced by placing plastic flats and flower pots in with their recycling box. Village personnel advise that although these items may have the recycling symbol, they are not recyclable by the village.
The types of plastic containers that can be recycled in your recycling box are beverage, food, detergent, milk and non-toxic household cleaners. Some examples of a number "1" plastic container would be soda, mouthwash, salad dressing bottles, peanut butter jars, etc. Examples of number "2" plastic containers would be milk jugs, water, juice and shampoo bottles, as well as liquid detergent containers. All containers must be rinsed of all food or beverage residue.
Other plastics with the symbols "3" through "7" are to be disposed of as garbage or rubbish. Examples of non-acceptable plastics include toys, utensils, cups, plates, motor oil plastic cans, etc.
Any questions should be referred to the Department of Public Works at 465-4003.
Please observe the Village's Sanitation Guidelines by adhering to the following instructions:
1. Rubbish should be placed at the curb Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.
2. Sharp objects, such as broken glass, sharp pieces of metal and knives should not be placed loosely in plastic or paper bags. Proper precaution should be taken, such as placing them in cardboard boxes tied with string or tape.
The Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will conduct its monthly S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program Saturday, July 20. The program, which is being held at various locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, will make hazardous waste facilities accessible to as many residents as possible.
Sunday's program will be held at the Market Lane Park Garage in Levittown. The hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Under the S.T.O.P. program, residents are able to take polluting materials to the facility and have them disposed of by a registered, professional disposal company, free of charge. The facility will not accept the following materials: ammunition, explosives, radioactives, infectious waste, gas cylinders and barbecue tanks.
