The endorsement of Alfano is unusual in that the party has traditionally endorsed Democratic candidates in the west-end of Nassau.
McCarthy, who is seeking another term in Congress will most likely face off against the winner of a Republican primary, is known for her support of gun laws, day care, education and health legislation. "The Working Families Party has taken the lead on issues like living wage jobs, accessible health care and quality public education," McCarthy said.
Among the issues Alfano's office believes the assemblyman stands for are education, low taxes, civil rights and healthcare. "One of my biggest issues as assemblyman is education and empowerment," said Alfano. "I truly believe that good schools, quality health care and low taxes are a key to a successful community."
Founded in 1998, the Working Families Party, a coalition of over 70 unions and community groups, registered 102,000 votes statewide in the 2000 election.
