The Nassau County Softball Coaches' Association has established the "Crystal Boyd Nassau County Player of the Year Award," named in her honor because she set the standard for Nassau County softball players who strive to achieve the highest recognition in their sport.

Boyd was one of the most feared hitters and respected short stops who showed all what could be accomplished on an individual and team basis. She went on to have an outstanding collegiate career at Division I Hofstra University, earning recognition as a top player. She also had a stellar professional softball career.

From now on, Boyd will be invited to the county dinner where she will present the Crystal Boyd Award for best player of the year.

Due to the SAT I and II exam schedule, the Garden City High School Homecoming has been changed to Saturday, Oct. 26. The parade will start at 12:15 p.m. followed by an alumni reception and barbecue at 1 p.m. The Trojans will challenge MacArthur at 2 p.m. Mark the calendar - this is a great day.

The American Heart Association began preparation for their annual Heart Walk with a corporate kick-off party held during a Long Island Ducks game at Citipark stadium. This year's Heart Walk chairman is Richard Kessel, LIPA chairman and CEO. Kessel invited representatives from several corporations to offer their organizations the opportunity to become sponsors and create teams for this year's walk.

"The importance in getting involved in this event is evident when you start to realize heart disease is taking the lives of thousands of our family members, friends and neighbors each year," Kessel said. "This event is one of the American Heart Association's strongest tools to fight heart disease and stroke."

This year's walk will take place on Oct. 27 at two locations - Nassau Community College in Garden City and the New York Institute of Technology in Central Islip. People interested in more information on the walk can call the association at 777-8447.
